If a storm has damaged your roof, the claims process can feel overwhelming. Taking it one step at a time makes it much easier. This is general information, not legal advice, so always check your own policy.
Step 1: Protect your home
Most policies expect you to prevent further damage. Get leaks stopped and keep receipts for tarps or emergency repairs.
Step 2: Document the damage
Take photos of what you can see safely, and note the date of the storm. A professional inspection gives you a much fuller picture.
Step 3: Contact your insurance company
Report the claim and write down your claim number. Ask about your deductible and any deadlines that apply.
Step 4: Meet the adjuster
The adjuster inspects the property and writes up the damage. You can ask your roofer to be there to point out what they found.
Step 5: Review your estimate
Your insurance company will send a settlement or scope of loss. Compare it with your contractor's estimate and ask questions about anything that does not match.
Texas rules worth knowing
- You must pay your deductible. A contractor cannot legally waive, absorb or rebate it.
- Roofers cannot negotiate your claim. That is reserved for licensed public adjusters and attorneys.
- Read before you sign. Make sure you understand any contract, including what happens if your claim is denied.
